Vestibular rehabilitation

Vestibular rehabilitation is aimed at people suffering from vertigo, balance problems or instability. It involves re-training the vestibular system through specific exercises, to improve orientation, coordination and safety when moving around.

Rehabilitation
“Rehabilitating the vestibular system means relearning how to feel stable in movement.”

Description

The vestibular system, located in the inner ear, plays a key role in maintaining balance, perceiving movement and coordinating the eyes and body. When it is disrupted (infection, trauma, degenerative pathology, etc.), it can cause vertigo, walking difficulties, feelings of floating or postural instability.

Vestibular rehabilitation involves stimulating the brain's ability to adapt and compensate for these disturbances. Following a detailed functional assessment, a program of progressive exercises is drawn up to re-train the balance mechanisms, improve gaze stabilization and reduce the sensation of vertigo.

The techniques used include oculo-vestibular adaptation exercises, head and trunk movements, static and dynamic balance work, and multisensory stimulation.

Treatment is personalised, progressive and always respectful of the patient's tolerance threshold. The aim is to improve quality of life, make walking safer and encourage patients to regain their independence without fear of imbalance.

Indication

  • Positional vertigo (BPPV), chronic instability.
  • Vestibular neuritis, labyrinthitis, Meniere's syndrome
  • Age-related balance disorders, stroke or neurological damage.
  • Post-traumatic or post-operative instability (inner ear, neck, etc.).
  • Pitching sensations, visual blur when walking, postural phobias.
  • Prevention of falls linked to vestibular deficits.

Expert Tips

  • Start rehabilitation as soon as the first episodes of vertigo or instability occur.
  • Avoid prolonged inactivity: Movement stimulates the vestibular system to adapt.
  • Repeat the exercises slowly and regularly to achieve lasting improvement.
  • Don't be afraid to experience slight dizziness during a session: This is often necessary to make progress.
